The holiday season is finally upon us! From October through December, our days will be filled with crisp, chilly weather, hot spiced drinks, holiday parties, and lots and lots of decorating. Of course, our obsession with seasonal sprucing up is hardly uncommon. Walk into any boutique this time of year and you’ll find heaps of fashion accessories that reflect the holiday spirit. Some of them are cute, some are classy, and some are… well, we won’t discuss it. With so many options out there, how do you know which ones to wear? Here are some tips to help you learn how to accessorize over the holidays.
Stay Warm With a Scarf
Some holiday accessories have to serve two purposes: look cute and keep you warm! Whether you’re spending the day on the slopes or simply walking to the subway station, a colorful scarf is the perfect blend of fashion and function. It’s also an easy way to give your look a little extra flair that keeps in the spirit of the season!
If you live somewhere with a really cold winter, we suggest wearing a scarf with some extra heft. Look for woolly, knitted numbers — the longer, the better. You’ll also want to find a color that complements the rest of your outfit. You can look for something in a matching shade (plaid scarves are great for this option) or something totally different to add some contrast to your ensemble.
You can even wear a scarf with a necklace to add some shine! Drape one over the other, wear an ultra-long pendant that lays past the end of your scarf, or use some origami-style folding to join the accessories together.
Once you find some pieces that look great together, play with different styling options until you discover how to accessorize your outfit the way you like it. When you’re done, you should have a look that’s both toasty and totally beautiful!
Be Merry and Bright
Once the weather outside gets… well, frightful, people start making their homes feel warmer. We start up the fireplace, serve hot cocoa and cider, and hang strings of warm lights. But the urge to have a warm, friendly glow doesn’t stop once the decor is up. Most folks carry that vibe right into their makeup, their clothing, and their holiday accessories.
If you find yourself scanning the jewelry rack this time of year, do your best to stay away from non-metallic pieces like leather or ribbon. When it comes to this season, the key difference is a focus on brilliance. This is the perfect time for solid gold cuff bracelets, gemstone pendants in deep jewel tones, and anything else you have that adds some extra sparkle to your look.
If you’re not sure how to accessorize for a holiday party, consider the occasion you’re celebrating. You should be looking for jewelry that suits the situation. This will change depending on the holiday in question; Thanksgiving and Christmas call for brilliant pieces in shades of silver and gold, but New Year’s Eve allows for pieces with brightly-colored gemstones (or even a little glitter).
Should your holiday jewelry be extravagant or understated? Really, it’s entirely up to your personal style. We’ve seen delicate gold chains and crystal-encrusted statement jewelry in equal measure during the holidays, and they always look great! Just find something that suits you and give it a little festive flair.
Sophistication, not Silliness
The holidays mean something different to every single person. For some, it’s a time to celebrate family. For others, it’s all about religious ceremonies and tradition. And for many, it’s about having a jolly old time! These different perspectives contribute to the wide variety of holiday decor we see every year, from the ornaments we put on our trees down to our holiday accessories.
As far as we’re concerned, holiday outfits should always be sophisticated and elegant — and that includes the accessories you wear. Embrace the reds and greens (olive is actually trending), but don’t need to wear a Santa Claus pendant, earrings shaped like Christmas trees, or a scarf printed with snowflakes! Unless you’re attending an Ugly Sweater party, leave the reindeer broach with the light-up nose at home.
Of course, accessorizing for the holiday season isn’t that different from the way you do it all year long. Once you know how to accessorize in a way that makes you feel happy and confident you can easily adjust the type of accessories you wear to suit the occasion. Try different looks and experiment with new styles, so that, this holiday season, you can be bright and beautiful!
